Peace Pledge . World

The word “peace” is not just a political slogan or plank in a political platform.  It gives expression to a universal human longing for safety and friendship. We dare to envision a world at peace – a world that resolves international conflict through diplomacy and mutual understanding, that stops wasting valuable resources on war-preparation and waging war, that treats all people with respect and always seeks nonviolent solutions to human problems.

Our peace pledge, unlike a promise made between private individuals, signifies a public commitment, and it is a commitment that many before us have made.   “I think of all the nonviolent movements over history,” writes mediator and child advocate Cat Zavis. “Movements steeped in deep and rich spiritual traditions of refusing to see the ‘other’ as your enemy, refusing to demonize, refusing to pick up arms, refusing to close one’s heart.” In making this peace pledge, we agree to join with others to move the world in the direction of generosity and cooperation.

Our connections to one another are global ones, transcending the borders — geographic, political, cultural – that divide us. “No man is an island,” wrote the English poet John Donne. “Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”  The world that we share renders us all vulnerable – nuclear war could destroy human life on earth – but also enables cooperation and mutual support. We have the capacity to protect one another, to halt the machinery of violence and war, to live in peace.
